1. Is the GEOportal a Community portal?

No, the GEOportal is not a community portal, but a gateway to Global Earth Observation data, information and services. The GEOportal provides an entry point to the resources contributing to GEOSS independently from the user location or the nature of usage within the GEOSS areas of application. GEOportal is not targeted on a single community of interest, but addresses the informational needs of all GEO Societal Benefit Areas globally, and extends the community concept of GEOSS resources and community portals to a global community and across all users of GEOSS

2. Who owns the GEOportal?

GEOportal complements the already existing community portals and other portals operated by GEO Members and Participating Organizations and as such, unlike most other GEOSS components and community portals, it does not belong to any single member or organization. The GEOportal is operated by the European Space Agency (ESA) under the authority of the GEO Secretariat.

3. What kind of services can I find on the GEOportal?

GEOportal is a gateway to global Earth Observation data, information and services.

Based on the GEO recommended standards and following the Geospatial Portal Reference Architecture of the OGC the GEOportal provides a variety of services:

  • Geospatial Portal Service providing the user interfaces for viewing, discovering data, information and services available in GEOSS.
  • Portrayal Viewer Service allowing the display and handling of maps and context information from various sources, e.g. from different GEO Societal Benefit Areas through WMS services.
  • Interfaces to Catalogue Services of the GEOSS Clearinghouse, allowing catalogues search in an interoperable manner.
  • Browse through a comprehensive directory of service providers e.g. related to GEO Members and Participating Organizations.
  • Retrieval of Earth Observation education, training and capacity building resources.

13. How can I make my resources appear on the GEOportal?

To make your resource appear on the GEOportal, you need to register your resource into the GEOSS Components and Service Registry (just follow the link "Register your resource"). You can access the Registry by following the link available on the GEOportal homepage.

After the registration your resource will be harvested from the Registry by the GEOSS Clearinghouse and will be then visible in the GEOportal.

14. I have registered my resources on the GEOSS Registry, but I am still not able to retrieve them through the GEOportal? Why?

If you have registered your resource into the GEOSS Component and Service Registry, your resource will be available among the GEOSS resources as soon as the GEOSS Clearinghouse harvests it from the Registry. Once the GEOSS Clearinghouse has harvested your resource, you will be able to retrieve your resource by clicking on the "Search for GEOSS resources" link and filling-in the related search form.

Also the GEOportal stores locally information on EO resources (registered in GEOSS or not). If a resource has been registered in the GEOSS registries, the related entry undergoes an editorial review and possible graphic enhancements by the GEOportal editorial team, before the publication on the GEOportal, and this process might take some time.

If you believe we have failed to include an entry click on  to send us email about it.
